Talons Philosophy

An Open Online Highschool Philosophy Course

I hate the Melody! – Arden Nelson

Philosophy is rooted from the ancient Greek word: Philo – loving, and sophia – wisdom. From that I think it would be safe to assume that this is a study for those who want the answers to often unanswerable questions, who want a new way to view the world, and for those who want to find their truth

On the very first day we were asked “what is philosophy?”

This is a question that kind of stumped me, although we could have just looked up the definition we spent and will spend a fair amount of time reflecting on this topic. What is philosophy? I went home and thought long and hard about that but still could not come up with an answer. That is one thing I am really looking forward to in this class is being able to answer that question. So far from what I’ve learned in the past week I believe that truths are personal and everyone has their own idea of what is and isn’t real and maybe that means that everyone has a different belief on what philosophy is!

So far I believe philosophy is best studied through discussion, where these ideas can be further investigated and opinions or truths can be shared to spark a conversation or in some cases a polite argument. Nigel Warburton said in his article Talk With Me:

“Philosophy should be conversation, not dogma – face-to-face talk about our place in the cosmos and how we should live”.

In our class we have no shortage on philosophical conversations and its great especially with so many different personalities and personal views. And hopefully those conversations can lead us to answer the question “what is philosophy?” That’s it. That’s all I have to say. Happy philosophy everyone!
