Democratic government and society’s goals -Misha & Toren

By definition democracy means a government by the people. If government is ‘by the people’ does it really achieve society’s goal as a whole? There are five main goals that a democratic government should supposedly reach that being security, prosperity, equality, justice, and liberty. However for a democracy to work a society must have rule by law, protections for both civil rights, civil liberties, tolerance of dissent and acceptance of majority decisions by the minority. A goal has to be had by someone or some group. Different people want different things for their societies.

The rule of law brings order to society. A properly functioning judicial system and police force can provide stability. Constitutional reform and the establishment of new legal entities to deal with justice issues in the post-conflict phase are important components to a peace building effort. Ultimately, some debate reconciliation depends in part on the restoration of the rule of law. The focus best assist countries construct a rule of law system.

People are not inherently democratic. People want to do what they want to do. So, we need to protect the principles of democracy with law. Remember that the Constitution, the basis of every one of our laws, is intended to protect individual rights against a majority over rule, even though a government truly cannot speak for everyone.

The principle of “majority rules” is absolutely not what the Constitution implements. We have to have laws so the majority of people in the country can’t vote to send a certain race or ethnocentric group to a ghetto or a prison camp. Democratic law is based on fairness and individual rights (even though the base of democracy follows these not all governments are truly a hundred percent democratic) for freedom from prosecution in speech, religious choice, movement from place to place, public assembly, privacy, self defense, etc. Without law these democratic rights might be overwhelmed by an oppressive government. Laws provide a proactive way to avoid the loss or violation of personal and individual rights in a democracy. That in one’s eyes can be view as how a ideal society should be others may however disagree because everyone’s goal in a society differ than others. There are other ways we can approach our democratic government because It’s hard to achieve a goal when we change direction every four years.

A possible better model might be one government with its individual subsections controlled by vote. Instead of voting for a group which shares some of your interests the public could vote independently on issues and the values of different fields for funding. The main flaw here is the lack of interest. Few enough people vote for the circus of two battling parties, even fewer would take interest in smaller issues. This could possibly be beneficial with fewer pointless votes, or votes decided only by the marketing of one side. Only people who care, and are theoretically informed, would vote on the issue.

I haven’t spent much of my life thinking about politics so I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m just utterly wrong, but I think the above model would help a society define its individual goals, rather than conforming to a vague idea of what its resident party wants. Without the flip flopping of rivaling parties, it might help the goals come to fruition.

Heal the World… with art

Art can be labelled as the appreciation of beauty because to everyone beauty is defined differently whether it’s the way someone looks, the rich taste in food, or even music. An object’s beauty would appear to be a relational, mind-dependent property – a property it possesses in asset of its capacity to affect observers in a certain manner.

Immanuel Kant presented an idea of an aesthetic judgment as a judgment that must be founded on a feeling of pleasure or displeasure; he insisted that a pure aesthetic judgment about an object is one that is unaffected by any concepts under which the object might be seen; and he tried to show that the implied claim of such a judgment to be valid for everyone is justified. But how acceptable is his conception of an aesthetic judgment and how successful is his attempted justification of the claims of pure aesthetic judgments

There’s A Place In
Your Heart
And I Know That It Is Love
And This Place Could
Be Much
Brighter Than Tomorrow
And If You Really Try
You’ll Find There’s No Need
To Cry
In This Place You’ll Feel
There’s No Hurt Or Sorrow

There Are Ways
To Get There
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Little Space
Make A Better Place…

Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race
There Are People Dying
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Better Place
For You And For Me

If You Want To Know Why
There’s A Love That
Cannot Lie
Love Is Strong
It Only Cares For
Joyful Giving
If We Try
We Shall See
In This Bliss
We Cannot Feel
Fear Or Dread
We Stop Existing And
Start Living

Then It Feels That Always
Love’s Enough For
Us Growing
So Make A Better World
Make A Better World…

Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race
There Are People Dying
If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Better Place
For You And For Me

And The Dream We Were
Conceived In
Will Reveal A Joyful Face
And The World We
Once Believed In
Will Shine Again In Grace
Then Why Do We Keep
Strangling Life
Wound This Earth
Crucify Its Soul
Though It’s Plain To See
This World Is Heavenly
Be God’s Glow

We Could Fly So High
Let Our Spirits Never Die
In My Heart
I Feel You Are All
My Brothers
Create A World With
No Fear
Together We’ll Cry
Happy Tears
See The Nations Turn
Their Swords
Into Plowshares

We Could Really Get There
If You Cared Enough
For The Living
Make A Little Space
To Make A Better Place…

Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race
There Are People Dying
If You Care Enough

Heal the world we live in, save it for our children
Heal the world we live in, save it for our children
Heal the world we live in, save it for our children
Heal the world we live in, save it for our children

Michael Jackson’s song Heal the World is a beautiful song that shows art with the lyrics and message that comes a long with it. On February 3, 1992, he created the “Heal The World Foundation”  and spoke about that during during a press conference the goal of the foundation is to provide rescue to world-wide children; protection against abuse; care giving; delivering medicines for children and fight world hunger, as well as to convey awareness on children’s rights and necessities, and improve world’s life standards. It is clear that these are things that Michael cared about and that is shown through his humanitarian work. However he left us with his song Heal the World that’s aim is to open the mind of his audience in ways that they can give back. The song is to heal the world, to make it a better place for you and for me and whole entire human race. He tries to make it clear that YOU can change or “heal the world” from what it has become and “make it a better place” caring for homeless people and helping the poor feeding the hungry. It’s about world peace there are much more important things than politics or government.  If we care about the people who are living in poverty and do something to help them the world would be a much better place. Jackson tried to send a message  about his strong beliefs in helping the world through his music to the audience in a different way than just making a speech, it was done in an enjoyable  that can still however impact you in ways that make you stop and think even if it’s just for a moment and to me that’s art.

Is it moral or immoral? hmmm…

Religiously to tackle such an issue like this can be quite controversial.  Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law. However what about in cases of rape is abortion then justifiable?

In Poland on October 30, 2012 The European court of human rights disapproves abortion in the case of a fourteen year old victim that had been raped. Eventually after much debate with the court it was finally allowed.. It should be the right of the female to an abortion. It would be unfair to force a woman to carry the potential child of the ‘rapist”. With the many negative affects that could come along with it. An example of this would be women who were raped by someone carrying STDs or any other disease because that is something that could not only impact the mother but the child as well, women who were raped by family members The right to have an abortion should also be okayed when there are medical situations in which it is kinder to terminate the pregnancy than to allow a severely and profoundly disabled fetus.

According to Kantian ethics is it right or wrong to have an abortion?

Kant’s categorical imperative is that one must act in a manner in which the action becomes universal law. That is to say, what you do, you believe that everyone should do.

According to Kant abortion is immortal. It could be said that Kantian ethics would say that if a woman had an abortion, she is suggesting that every woman should have an abortion. Kant claimed that if it is possible to picture a world where everyone acted on X principle (abortion), then it becomes moral. The issue is that, some people have objected to Kant’s theory for the reason that something could actually become something done very frequently universally and yet still remain immoral. The second part of Kant’s imperative ethics is that people should not merely be treated as a means to an end, but an end in themselves as well. Therefore, if principle X were universalizable and reversible, and if it also treats people as an end in themselves, then principle X must be moral.

Epistemology

George Berkeley whom I had previously researched on believed that all ideas except self and god are really secondary qualities and self and god our primary qualities. Primary qualities exist in the world and secondary qualities exist as an experience of the mind.   We create the world and any physical object in our minds with the view that “experience fills our mind with knowledge”.

Berkeley’s epistemogical arguments fail due to Lock’s “easily maintain that material objects are perceived even though they are no immediately perceived”.

In my opinion I disagree with Berkley’s view and find that there are many flaws.

However  if there’s nothing that exists outside the mind, and if the ideas in ones mind define reality, how come you can prove minds wrong?

Another strong belief was that there was an outside world, and it was this world which caused the ideas one has within one’s mind, Berkeley sought to prove that the outside world was also composed solely of ideas

My thought

My argument and belief differs completely from Berkley’s views. In fact I believe that Knowledge cannot be perceived outside of living beings and that knowledge is not given to us by an outside being(god) but by what we perceive and the experiences we gain.

Ex: If you believe that penguins are black and white without ever viewing or experimenting with that thought then that is belief and not knowledge.

A thought or idea must be justified and that is knowledge…
